The Washington Redskins was the name of the Washington Football Team before the Libtards took over. The once proud Redskins are now called the Washington Commanders – what does that even mean?

The Redskins were founded in 1932 by owner George Preston Marshall.

The Redskins have been a feast or famine franchise. The 5 championships they have won were attained during two 10-year spans. From 1936 to 1945, Washington went to the NFL Championship six times, winning two of them.

From 1982 to 1991 they appeared in the playoffs seven times, captured four Conference titles, and won three Super Bowls in four appearances.

In the second period, and most successful time in franchise history, head coach Joe Gibbs won three Super Bowls with 3 different QBs and 3 different RBs. This is the greatest dynasty in NFL history that is strangely not recognized as such. A master tactician, Gibbs has also won championships as a NASCAR team owner.

The Titans are the only team in the NFL to have two players rush for 2,000 yards in a season–Chris Johnson (2009) and Derrick Henry (2020).

The Titans have made it to the Super Bowl one time in their history, losing to the Rams by a TD in Super Bowl XXXIV. The Titans have made the playoffs 25 times since 1960.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers aka “Tompa Bay” aka The “Fightin’ Tom Bradys” were formed in 1976 at the same time as the Seahawks. From 1977 to 2001 the Bucs were in the NFC Central division with the Bears, Packers, Vikings, and Lions. Every year when the Tampa Bay Bucs would play Green Bay, you could count on at least 2 Chris Berman “Bay of Pigs” invasion references.

Their NFC Central foes absolutely feasted on Tampa for year. From their inception, the Bucs lost 26 straight games in their first two seasons and didn’t win a game in year one.

In 1979 behind OC Joe Gibbs and QB Doug Williams, Bucco Bruce’s Boys became the first post AFL-NFL merger expansion team to win their division, win a playoff game, and host a conference championship. Then their fans endured 14 consecutive losing seasons from 1983 to 1996. But then, things got interesting.

HOFer Tony Dungy was brought in as head coach, taking over from roster architect Sam Wyche. 1997 the Buccaneers had their first winning season since 1982 and made the playoffs. Behind a stifling defense, they made the playoffs in 4 of 5 seasons.

Jon Gruden replaced Dungy and Tampa won its first Super Bowl in 2002, and absolute dismantling of the Raiders, Gruden’s former team.

In 1998 they moved out of original stadium “The Big Sombrero” Tampa Stadium that had hosted several Super Bowls, into Raymond James Stadium.

The Buccaneers and Ravens are the only two NFL franchises who are undefeated in multiple Super Bowl appearances.

The Super Bowl – has God ever created a greater spectacle? Not as far as I’m concerned.
I fell in love with the NFL’s “The Big Game” as a 9 year-old watching Joe Montana engineer a game-winning drive in Super Bowl 23 to slay the Bengals and never looked back.

Super Bowl XXIII was the first time I recorded the entire game on the VCR – had to use 2 tapes lol. Watched it for months after. This was pre YouTube, when it was on ONCE and lost to history/memory.

On this Super Bowl page you will find lists of all-time winners and losers, Super Bowl MVPs, game recaps, lists of the greatest games, and interviews with the men, like Terry Bradshaw, Sam Wyche, Franco Harris, who made this game into the iconic culmination of the NFL season, transcending sports and touching all aspects of American life, that it has become in 50+ years.
The best part of my journalistic career was covering Super Bowl LII in Minnesota from Radio Row for a week in 2018. I recapped my entire experience in this post – “What’s It Like On Radio Row?
The piece and this page is written from the perspective of a Super Bowl fan — not some stuffy journalist — because that is what I am; a fan of the greatest measure and culmination of a year of courage, self-denial, and discipline that the game represents.
The Super Bowl is like a time capsule. Watching an old game takes you back and gives you a feel for society and culture at that same time, and how it has changed, just like the game itself.

At any point in the last 40 years, mention a game and I can tell you exactly where I was, the Super Bowl MVP, and what I was doing in my life during the game.

So click through the links I have created below and enjoy a slow walk through NFL history. Feel free to comment and share your favorite Super Bowl memories and let’s get nostalgic!

The Seattle Seahawks entered the NFL as an expansion team in 1976. Until 2001, the Seahawks were in the AFC West – it is still weird for us old schoolers to accept that they are in the NFC West now. And, we still pine for the Kingdome the stadium they played in from their inception until 1999.

Seahawks fans are known as the “12th Man” because their loudness gives them such an edge during home games, it feels as though there is a “12th” defender on the field. The fans set a Guinness World Record for crowd noise against the Saints in 2013, chiming in at 137.6 decibels during the game.

The Seahawks are the only NFL team in the American Pacific Northwest. They are also the only team to have ever played in an AFC Championship Game and an NFC Championship Game. The Seahawks have appeared in three Super Bowls, winning one when they smashed the Denver Broncos 43-8.

Iconic head coach Chuck Knox aka “Ground Chuck” created the first great era of Seahawks teams with his smash mouth, run-first style on offense.

The team was founded in 1946 as a charter member of the All-America Football Conference (AAFC), and joined the NFL in 1949 when the leagues merged. The 49ers were the first major league professional sports franchise based in San Francisco, and are the 10th oldest franchise in the NFL. The team began play at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco before moving to Candlestick Park in 1971, and then to Levi’s Stadium in 2014. Since 1988, the 49ers have been headquartered in Santa Clara.

The have won 6 Super Bowls which is tied with the New England Patriots for the most in history. They have played in 16 conference championship games and won 11 of them – both the most in NFL history.

The Steelers have been in 8 Super Bowls, which is tied as the second most appearances with the Broncos and Cowboys – their once hated rivals in the 70s.
Interestingly, the were once called the Pittsburgh Pirates when they entered the NFL, taking their name from the MLB team. They changed their name to the Steelers in 1940.

The Philadelphia Eagles were founded in 1933 as a replacement for the bankrupt Frankford Yellow Jackets. A group led by Bert Bell (the NFL commissioner from 1946 until his death in 1959) secured the rights to an NFL franchise in Philadelphia.

Since then, the Eagles have appeared in the playoffs 27 times, won 14 division titles (11 in the NFC East), appeared in four NFL Championship Games, winning three of them (1948, 1949, and 1960), and appeared in three Super Bowls, winning Super Bowl LII at the end of the 2017 season.

The Eagles have been littered with characters over the course of their history. From Chuck Bednarik aka Concrete Charlie to Dick Vermeil to Donovan McNabb to Buddy Ryan to Reggie White to Terrell Owens – the notorious Philly fans love and hate them all.

Their rivalry with the Pittsburgh Steelers is another bitter rivalry known as the battle of Pennsylvania, roughly dating back to 1933. The Eagles ranked among the best in the league in attendance and sold out every game since the 1999 season.

Even with the Super Bowl III in 1968 victory led by Broadway Joe Namath over the heavily favored Baltimore Colts, they are one of four teams to never win an AFC Championship.

Only two teams have a longer Super Bowl drought than the Jets – The Lions and Browns.

The New York Giants were one of five teams that joined the NFL in 1925 and the only one that still exists. The Giants are the NFL’s longest established team in the Northeastern United States.

The “G-Men” have won the 3rd most championships with eight: 4 were won before the NFL-AFL merger and were true NFL championships and four Super Bowls. “Big Blue” have more championship appearances than any other team with 19. Only the Packers (13) and Bears (9) have won more in NFL history.

The team name of the “New York Football Giants” came about when the Giants changed their name from NY Giants which was also the name of the NYC MLB team at the same time. The Giants rivalry with the Eagles started in 1933.

The New Orleans Saints were founded in 1966 and joined the NFL in 1967. And they immediately sucked from their inception, being known by beloved fans as the “Aints.” It took them 20 years to have a winning record and make the NFL playoffs. It took them until 2000 to win their first playoff game, a span of 34 seasons.

In 2009 they won their first and only Super Bowl appearance against the Colts, thanks largely to a Peyton Manning pick six. Old Noodle Arm reared back and tossed a TUD to the opposing team for the win, just like his dad Archie Manning used to do 30 years earlier.

The Saints used to be in the NFC West from 1970 to 2001 and were mercilessly throttled by those great 49ers teams of the 80s and 90s.

The New England Patriots are a professional NFL football team based in Foxborough, MA,22 miles southwest of Boston. Founded in 1959 as the Boston Patriots, the team was a charter member of the American Football League (AFL) before joining the NFL in 1970 through the AFL–NFL merger.

The Patriots played their home games at various stadiums throughout Boston until the franchise moved to Foxborough in 1971. As part of the move, the team changed its name to the New England Patriots. Home games were played at Foxboro Stadium until 2002 when the stadium was demolished alongside the opening of Gillette Stadium. The team began utilizing Gillette Stadium for home games the same year.

The Patriots hold the records for most Super Bowl wins (6, tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers), appearances (11), and losses (5, tied with the Denver Broncos). The team enjoyed its most success thanks to head coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady. During this time the Patriots became one of the greatest dynasties in American sports history.

From 2001 to 2019 the Patriots set every major Super Bowl record. The Patriots established NFL records for the most wins in a ten-year period (126 from 2003 to 2012), the most playoff wins (37), the longest winning streak of regular season and playoff games (21 from October 2003 to October 2004), the most consecutive winning seasons (19 from 2001 to 2019), the most consecutive division titles (11 from 2009 to 2019), the only undefeated 16-game regular season (2007), and the highest postseason winning percentage (.638).

Since 1994 the Patriots have sold out every preseason, regular season, and playoff home game.
