NFL Dream Season was a joint venture between ESPN and NFL Films and was the initial incarnation of Fantasy Football.

They poured through old NFL Films footage and combined physical film with imagination and created matchups that never happened to answer the question, “What team is the greatest in NFL history?”

The Premise

The year was 1988. The internet did not exist. Neither did other upcoming awesome stuff like DVD players or Pamela Anderson.

The argument about best NFL team ever is not a new one. But the way NFL Films attempted to solve it was as novel as it was bold.

The staff at NFL Films took an internal poll and decided on the 20 best teams in NFL history.

They took those results and ran them through a computer game called NFL Challenge, an MS-DOS computer program (watch it here, you can still play today).

ESPN used the computer simulation results to play each fictional game using NFL Films footage to make it appear that one was watching an actual game.

NFL Films added subjective assessments from active and retired coaches to help gauge intangibles and add them to the equation.

From there, they created four divisions of five teams each.

The Gameplay

With the 20 greatest NFL teams chosen, they started the “Dream Season.”

Each team played a regular season schedule of six games. The four division winners advanced to a four team “dream” playoffs. The final two teams played each other in the “Dream Bowl” to determine the greatest NFL team of all-time.

Now that the format and teams had been decided, how to go about creating hour-long episodes of each game? By making each episode a mini-game of itself.

Every game during NFL Dream Season had a play by play crew of two Pro Football Hall of Famers; Merrill Reese, the voice of the Philadelphia Eagles since 1977. And Steve Sabol, the face, president, and co-founder (with his dad Ed) of NFL Films.

To create dream matchups between teams that didn’t play at the same time (hence no footage) the team at NFL Films painstakingly edited and cut scenes from old games and combined them.

“It just took a whole lot of patience, like doing the biggest jigsaw puzzle in the world,” said Sabol, who said it took up to 10 weeks to create just one game.

Each game also featured a pregame show hosted by Reese and Sabol from inside a set that looked like an NFL broadcast booth – complete with actors as other media members to create ambiance and a sense of realism.

The halftime show was hosted by Chris Berman who showed highlights of other “dream” games in progress.

And of course a post-game recap with aforementioned duo of Reese and Sabol. And “Boomer” hosted the postgame show and recapped that week’s outcomes and stats. It was awesome!

Because linear time wasn’t a thing, it lead to some really cool anomalies.

• Weeb Eubank coaching against himself in a battle of ’59 Colts vs. ’68 Jets
• Norm Van Brocklin quarterbacking two teams at the same time (Eagles and Rams)
• Paul Warfield playing wide receiver for two teams in the same game (Browns vs. Dolphins)
• Chuck Noll coaching the Steelers while blocking for the Browns in the same game

Each “game” consisted of roughly 40 plays. Some game match-ups were reduced to highlights shared via Berman during halftime/post game simply because they could not find enough suitable footage.

The Results

The series ran a total of six weeks and featured six full games.

Week by week, the matchups were: (1) 1985 Bears vs. 1977 Cowboys; (2) 1984 49ers vs. 1966 Packers; (3) 1976 Raiders vs. 1969 Chiefs; (4) 1986 Giants vs. 1982 Redskins; (5) 1972 Dolphins vs. 1968 Jets; (6) 1986 Bears vs. 1976 Raiders.

Conclusion

NFL Dream Season is reflective of a time when NFL Films and ESPN were both at their height of their powers. Some people would lump the NFL into that statement as well.

Watching the series is a lot of fun and even 30+ years later it is incredible to consider the amount of work and man hours put into the production.

After the Kansas City Chiefs vs. Chicago Bears Week 3 game on September 24th, with Taylor Swift in attendance, searches for Travis Kelce jerseys ballooned by 1,267% per Replay Poker.

Demand for Travis Kelce jerseys is at its highest since the previous all-time high after winning the 2023 Super Bowl. Overtaking star quarterback Patrick Mahomes for the first time in history.

Searches for Kansas City Chiefs jerseys and tickets have also surged by 1,974% and 1,853%, respectively, over the last seven days.

Analysis of Google search data reveals that searches for ‘Travis Kelce jersey’ exploded by 1,267% worldwide on September 26th compared to the prior seven days.

This comes amid dating rumors between Kelce and singer Taylor Swift, as the superstar musician appeared at the Kansas City Chiefs’ absolute destruction against the Chicago Bears. The Chiefs won the game 41-10. The Chiefs led 34-0 at halftime and the game could’ve just been stopped right then.

But if it had been, Swift would not have been able to see Trevvy’s TD that capped the Chiefs scoring barrage.

The analysis by Replay Poker reveals that searches for ‘Travis Kelce jersey’ soared by over 12 times the average volume compared to the last seven days.

The skyrocketing interest can be attributed to Taylor Swift’s rabid, hardcore fans known as “Swifites.”

During the Chiefs absolute POUNDING of the Chicago Bears, the national broadcast on Fox spent the majority of the second half of the game analyzing Swift’s attendance in a prviate box.

Flanked by TK’s mother, it is fair to wonder who referred to him as “Trevvy” first.

The increase in fans looking to purchase a Travis Kelce jersey as worn by Kelce can be attributed to the national TV audience via Fox.

And, T Swizzle fans looking to rep the jersey worn by the man who will doubtlessly inspire her next multi-platinum album.

Analysis of Google search data reveals that interest in Taylor Swift hits a five year high as she’s spotted at multiple NFL games amid an ongoing romance with Kansas City Chiefs’ star, Travis Kelce.

Interest for the Blank Space hitmaker has skyrocketed 271% since October 2018, making Internet interest hit a five year peak. This interest comes after numerous stories regarding Taylor Swift have made the headlines, most notably, her new romance with NFL star, Travis Kelce.

Swift has been spotted at two of his games, cheering him on whilst sat with his mother and her celebrity friends, including Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman and Sophie Turner.

Further analysis reveals demand for Travis Kelce jerseys is at the highest point since the Super Bowl LVII, which reached the highest point of all time.

For the first time in history, TK’s search demand has overtaken star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who led the Chiefs to victory at the Super Bowl LVII in February.

At the height of search interest, demand for Travis Kelce jerseys dwarfed Mahomes’ by over 2,000% over the last seven days.

Searches for Kansas City Chiefs jerseys and tickets also surged by 1,974% and 1,853%, respectively.

Taylor Swift and Kelce’s dating rumors have drawn intense public attention, causing interest in the Chiefs’ tickets and jerseys to skyrocket.

It’s fascinating to see that demand for Kelce’s jersey overtook Mahomes’ only after Taylor Swift was pictured. This shows just how influential the star and her legions of followers are.

Swift has over 273 million followers on Instagram alone, around 88 times that of Kelce, demonstrating just how powerful her fandom is and how it can cause record-breaking search increases.

Baseball Mogul is the best MLB simulation game ever and the very definition of thoughtful recreation.

Baseball is a thinking man’s game. The recent rise in sabermetrics proves this. And, that some people have too much time on their hands.

If you are a person that enjoys franchise mode of any sports video game or simulation, possibly even more than the gameplay itself, Baseball Mogul is for you. It takes the concepts applied in franchise mode and combines with a level of detail befitting a real MLB general manager.

Additionally, if you play in one pitch mode (meaning one pitch for at bat) games can take less than 10 minutes. Conversely, you can simulate single games, weeks, months, even years with minimal time investment. Or, as much time as you want to spend.

My first experience with an MLB simulation game was APBA Baseball.

APBA is an acronym for “American Professional Baseball Association.” Initially a board game launched in 1951, it eventually made the transition to a PC version. I am currently involved in a 16-team fantasy draft replay of the 1993 season and loving it.

But, one of the flaws of APBA is the experience of actually playing the game. This is where Baseball Mogul shines.

A full at bat is simulated with one click or your mouse. It could be one pitch, it could be a billion (imagine a billion pitch AB, lol). It simulates each pitch, shows you what kind of pitch, the MPH, and even location in an easy to read graph.

In the upper right hand corner, you see the play-by-play text related to each at bat. What happened, the fielders involved, and the ultimate outcome of the play.

The middle of the screen is dedicated to the batter facing the pitcher (with full animation) while the animation above shows where the ball is in the context of the stadium of each of the 32 MLB teams. It also shows the defensive ratings for each fielder on a scale of 100. And if you get a man on base, it shows his speed, also on a 100 point scale.

Another nice touch are the sounds of the game. Ambient sounds of fans in the stands continue throughout the game and they react to the action on the field as it happen. The crack of the bat, the sound of the ball hitting a fielder’s clove, it is all here and adds to the experience.

From this screen, you can steal, hit and run, bunt, and every other imaginable choice or outcome a big league manager faces during a game.

The main screen/home screen is the image above. From here, you can play games, adjust your lineup, scout other teams, or even get a detailed scouting report and grade for any player in the game.

Speaking of scouting reports, not only do you have the active roster of pitchers and players, but you have access to a full slate of REAL minor league players from Triple AAA to Single A.

Based on their performance at the various levels, you can elevate players to the active MLB roster, or demote them to the dregs of A ball.

But this ALL must be done in the context of payroll. You can adjust concession prices, negotiate media deals, re-sign players, etc.

I started my Baseball Mogul journey with a replay of the 2023 Kansas City Royals.

As you can imagine, it was a rough season. Zack Greinke and Brady Singer carried my pitching staff, while Bobby Witt Jr. and Salvador Perez carried the batters. And just like in real life, nothing much to report aside from those 4 players.

This continued throughout the 2024 season. Since the ’23 Royals were dead last in home runs, I overspent to acquire former Royals stud and club single-season home run record holder Jorge Soler. And have been in the red ever since.

I was encouraged that through 32 games we were 16-16. But as it turned out that was the high-water mark of the season. I am still licking my wounds in anticipation of 2025. Though Soler did lead the club in HR with 32.

Since I started with the worst team ever (on pace to have the most losses in a single season in Royals’ franchise history), I decided to start another concurrent season with the 1991 Pittsburgh Pirates.

They were a badass team I loved as a kid and I wanted to right the wrong of them losing three-straight NLCS.

Plus, since I started with the worst team (possibly ever) how different would it be to use one of the best?

Led by Gary Redus and Jeff King and Mike LaValliere (Spanky) of all people, we won the first nine games of the ’91 season, sweeping the Mets, Expos, and Cubs.

But I have difficult decisions to make, that make me love this MLB simulation game even more. An entire extra layer of simulation and gameplay.

There’s only so much money to go around, but Doug Drabek, Bobby Bonilla, and the man you love to hate Barry Bonds are all free agents after this season. As Cleveland Indians catcher Tom Berenger/Jake Taylor once said in the movie Major League, “Let’s win the whole bleepin’ thing.”

I have touched on most of the big league in-season and in-game management aspects. Another thing to consider is the ability to customize game play.

The first game I ever played was a simulation match-up between the 2015 World Series champion Royals versus the 1985 World Series champion Royals.

In true 2015 fashion, the ’15 Royals scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth off of ace closer ’95 Jeff Montgomery to secure the DUB, 5-4. It was thrilling. I also forgot how great Willie Wilson was and was reminded during the course of the game. And that Steve Balboni could MASH.

You can play full seasons with any team from 1901 to 2023. You can build a league with up to 32 teams comprised of any team in MLB history. You can create a custom league with fictional players. You can also grab your friends and draft full squads via fantasy draft mode.

Baseball Mogul is such a fun game. I have spent hours playing this game, with the intent of “just playing one game in my season”, and look forward to many more. I think I’ll play one more right now!

Madden 24 is scheduled to be released on August 15, 2023. But this week, the initial Madden 99 Club members are announced.

With Madden NFL 24 less than a month away from being released, EA Sports will be releasing the ratings of the top players at each position throughout the week.

Here is the order of what positions will be released this week (and 99 Club players by day):

• Monday: Wide receivers and safeties (Justin Jefferson)
• Tuesday: Edge rushers and defensive lineman (Aaron Donald)
• Wednesday: Running backs and offensive lineman (Zack Martin)
• Thursday: Cornerbacks and tight ends (Travis Kelce)
• Friday: Quarterbacks, linebackers, punters, kickers and fullbacks (Patrick Mahomes)

There is never a guarantee on how many players will make it, but for Madden NFL 24, the pre-season Madden 99 Club consisted of 5 total members.

On Monday 7/17, EA announced the Madden ratings for wide receivers and safeties.

And with it, the initial 99 Club member was announced – Minnesota Vikings WR Justin Jefferson received the honor, and after his 2023 season, you can’t argue with this selection.

On Tuesday, 7/18, EA announced Aaron Donald as a member of the Madden 99 Club. Donald sets the record for most 99 Club appearances ever (7).

But after a sub-par 2023 season, a lot of Twitter users are calling his selection into question.

Wrote one dude, “Chris Jones better be a 99 OVR too then.”

On Wednesday, 7/19, EA announced Dallas Cowboys guard Zack Martin as a member. The first guard since 2003 and Larry Allen, also of the Cowboys and COMPLETE BEAST!

Thursday, 7/20, EA announced Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce as a 99 OVR. The coolest TE in NFL history also has the most 99 Club appearances in history.

And on Friday, the 99 OVR announcements ended with the most selection of all: Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes.

Jefferson is the highest rated WR in Madden NFL 24. The Miami Dolphins Tyreek Hill finished in second, with a 98 player rating.

It’s interesting to see that despite football being the most popular sport in America, for gamers the most popular sports video game is the NBA 2K.

While four of the top five video games on this list are American sports, FIFA finishes third on this list, supporting soccer’s growing popularity across the United States. The game has been popularized by famous fans such as streamer ishowspeed.

The story that you are about to read is simply the greatest Tecmo Super Bowl Story Ever Told.

I did not write it. I could only hope to compile such prose in such a manner. Like I did with the time I went to a Tecmo Super Bowl tournament in Lincoln, NE and was forced to lower myself to Tony Eason, but did meet Danny Noonan.

This story, by the formidable “Big Red,” has existed in the Tecmo Super Bowl NES underground for years. (for more on that world visit https://tecmobowl.org/)

The memory of a simpler time. A time where all young dudes playing Tecmo Super Bowl on the NES had conversations with their buddies exactly like this.

Behold: I give you to Big Red and his OFFERING. None of the grammar has been corrected, the Realness maintained.

The VISCERAL REALNESS of Super Tecmo Bowl NES and a time we literally tell our children about this very day…

“This weekend, I won Tecmo with the Seahawks

But not just any ordinary way. I was traveling through Ohio towards the East Coast and eventually stopped in Martinsburg, West Virginia, and it was there that I found a small, cozy house where I could sense a Nintendo was present.

I knocked on the door and was welcomed in by a 40 year old man who was hanging out with two other young men, playing 8-bit Nintendo.

I asked them if I could stay for the evening since I was traveling around, and I told them that I was Big Red.

They let me stay, and I told them that they were very good, and that now they will be rewarded by watching me exhibit full domination at Tecmo Super Bowl.

I ordered the young woman there, the niece of the 40 year old man, to make a visit to the grocery store and purchase 3 cases of Old Milwaukee and a few Stouffer’s frozen pizzas.

Then, I sat down and told the three men to alternate playing against me in a season, as I would be the Seahawks.

I made my restrictions clear: I was not to be allowed to tamper with my playbook, and I was only allowed to run ONE play on offense: The Dave Krieg Play.

This play requires picking a pass play and then rolling out and watching one of your running backs in the flat be tangled with a defender. You take your QB and ram him into said defender and shake him off using the B button, freeing up your running back in the flat to complete a short pass to.

The three guys rotated games and found that I was in full force and could not be stopped. Frustrated, they continued to doctor their playbooks and try different methods to stop James Earl Jones (my meal ticket who I put in place of John L. Williams) from being freed up and making catches.

I was 2-0 by the time that young woman returned from the store, and at that point I shotgunned a beer after every touchdown I scored in game #3.

I strategically inserted Jeff Chadwick for Brian Blades, as Chadwick is a money player when it comes to throwing blocks for my man James Earl Jones. I got to 8-0, halfway point of the season, and in game #9 Krieg finally got injured on a sack. Right as he was carted off the field, the young woman in the kitchen said, “Stouffer’s Pizzas are ready!”

I replied, “So is Kelly Stouffer.”

She brought some Stouffer’s Pizza in for me and I scarfed some down while inserting Kelly Stouffer in the game. He ran the Kreig play as smooth as owl shit, and before I knew it, I was 16-0 and those three dudes were amazed and ready to upset me in the playoffs.

Using Kansas City, the one guy got shutout by me 37-0. After that game, I pounded two beers from a bong and said, “Give me a little break here before the Championship.”

I drank four beers during that break and was completely rip-roaring drunk. I took a blindfold out and put it around my eyes and put the controller on the floor and took my sandles off.

In the AFC Championship, blindfolded and using my toes on the controller I routed the Raiders 45-3. Using ONLY the Dave Kreig Play on offense. I drank about 4 more beers since I had my hands free.

They were about to give up at this point, and in the Super Bowl, I led 27-0 at the half and told them they must sacrifice the niece as a pleasure sacrifice. During the Mighty Bombjack Show, the young woman did a strip tease in front of me and poured more beer down my throat.

During the second half, she sat in my lap facing me. I wrapped my arms around her back and played with the controller behind her back, my face buried between her beefy, tan young breasts, and her bouncing up and down on my lubed-up shaft.

The other two drunk dudes were cheering me on while the 40 year old dude, the uncle of the hot young woman, tried to focus as I groaned and sloshed more beer down my throat and let that hot skank gyrate on my crotch much like Tim McKyer‘s daughter did to me once. This went on until the end of the 4th quarter, and when James Jones waltzed into the endzone to make the final score 47-7, I released my offering and nudged that skank off of me and began shaking up cans of Old Mil and spraying them everywhere in celebration.

Those three dudes gave me great hospitality this weekend, and I enlightened them with my Tecmo domination. I thank them all.”

Now that we have a good chunk of the 2021 season underway, there has been some enlightening games that have had us all rethinking our options for the best NHL players. The best point-scorers, playmakers, lockdown defenders and more are on this list, and no one can deny they are, but at what rank? There are trophies, goals, and points to consider – not to mention the overall results of the games and the love of the fans. 

Who is really the best of the best? Well, that’s what we’re here to discuss. A few games in, it became clear who was going to lead their team to victory and who was lower on the totem pole. Take a look at our rankings and see for yourself if you think we got it right.

7. Artemi Panarin, LW, New York Rangers

2020-21 Stats: 42 games, 17 goals, 41 assists, 58 points

Panarin had the pick of the bunch when he started, with teams everywhere clambering to draft him. But instead, he entered the arena a free agent in 2015 and has since gone on to rack up points, at 473, putting him in fifth place since 2015. 

And that’s all without mentioning his well-deserved Calder Trophy win as Rookie of the Year in 2016. It made him the first Chicago player to win the award since Patrick Kane in 2007. 

6. Alex Ovechkin, LW, Washington Capitals

2020-21 Stats: 45 games, 24 goals, 18 assists, 42 points

Nicknamed Alexander the Great for a reason, the Washington Capitals player was unfortunately limited this season to 45 games by an injury. However, he set out to prove that a little wear and tear wasn’t going to hold him back and led his entire team in goals. He also passed players Mike Gartner and Phil Esposito to reach to 6th in NHL history with 730. 

5. Nikita Kucherov, RW, Tampa Bay Lightning

Honors: Art Ross Trophy (2018-19), Ted Lindsay Award (2018-19), Hart Memorial Trophy (2018-19), Stanley Cup champion (2019-20, 2020-21)

We’re getting into the true greats now. Separating the boys from the men starts with Nikita Kucherov. More than just a pretty shirtless face, Kucherov has proved he became the darling of Tampa Bay with his skills on the ice.

Rather than dragging himself out of a hip surgery, he practically strode out of it and then went on to lead the Tampa Bay Lightning to their second straight Stanley Cup win. It’s truly an underdog story for the ages. The sooner a movie is out, the better. 

I say “lead”, because he managed to produce 32 points in 23 amazing games, which came out to nine more than any other postseason player. His points-per-game stats at 1.31 is only bested by famed Connor McDavid. 

4. Sidney Crosby, C, Pittsburgh Penguins

Honors: Art Ross Trophy (2006-07, 2013-14), Rocket Richard Trophy (2009-10, 2016-17), Ted Lindsay Award (2006-07, 2012-13, 2013-14), Hart Memorial Trophy (2006-07, 2013-14), Conn Smythe Trophy (2015-16, 2016-17), Stanley Cup champion (2008-09, 2015-16, 2016-17)

Once he was Sid the Kid, way back when he first stepped onto the NHL rink, now he’s reaching 34 and still is showing no signs of slowing down. 

After 16 seasons, that no. 1 overall pick 2005 is still paying off, with a placement of 10th in the league due to a point-per-game clip that saw him dominate with 62 points over 55 games. But it shouldn’t surprise anyone. The Penguin player has always managed to expertly maintain his point-per-game pace. 

His racking up of trophies and honors alone will surely see him make it into the Hall of Fame. 

3. Nathan MacKinnon, C, Colorado Avalanche

Honors: Calder Trophy (2013-14), Lady Byng Trophy (2019-20)

A baby-faced Nathan first stepped up to the NHL ice rink at just 18 and has since raised himself and his Avalanche team to an elite level. It’s no coincidence that the Colorado team quickly gained drastic progress from 2016 when they were last overall, to the President’s Trophy in 2020.

MacKinnon’s 354 goals since 2017 have only been beaten by two other players in that time, making for a hell of a great risk that has well paid off.

2. Leon Draisaitl, C, Edmonton Oilers

Honors: Art Ross Trophy (2019-20), Ted Lindsay Award (2019-20), Hart Memorial Trophy (2019-20)

The second of two Edmonton Oilers on this list, Draisaitl is a sublime player that has gained a lot of respect in his 25 years. Added to that list of awards is his 20-21 place as fourth in the league in terms of goals, with his impressive 31 total and his Most Valuable Player win in 2019. 

His superior size has served him well, at a whopping 6’2” and 208 pounds, he has surprising versatility on his side, as well as speed. This, plus his determined vision to score has led to him scoring the most goals for the Oilers, 11 across 27 games. 

1. Connor McDavid, C, Edmonton Oilers

Honors: Art Ross Trophy (2016-17, 2017-18, 2020-21), Ted Lindsay Award (2016-17, 2017-18, 2020-21), Hart Memorial Trophy (2016-17, 2020-21)

Could it really be anyone else? The 24-year-old was the top overall pick in the 2015 draft and has only gone from strength to strength since them, racking up awards like he’s collecting them. Just look at that list of honors, and it’s skimmed down to only the best. 

And only the best is exactly what he gives. The 2020-21 season was a particular favorite, seeing him collect 105 points across 56 games with his impressive speed and stick handling that should be taught in schools. He is regularly seen on the weekly highlight reels and gained his Most Valuable Player nod by a unanimous vote, which is only the second occurrence of such an event, joining a certain Wayne Gretzky in that list. 

Seeing his name next to a great like that can only mean that he deserves the place of top ranking. But who knows what the rest of the season will bring?

Gus Edwards’ fantasy value is at an all-time high – except no one knows.

But after reading this, YOU will know.

There are three things we know about Gus Edwards’ fantasy production after three years in the NFL:

1) He will rush for 700+ yards
2) He will average 5 YPC
3) He will get 130+ carries per season (9.6 carries per game)

Here is why I like Gus Edwards Fantasy value so much:

• Mark Ingram is GONE
• The 2020 Ravens led the NFL in rushing attempts with 555 (34.6 per game)
• The 2020 Ravens led the NFL in rushing yards with 3,071 (191 per game)
  The Ravens had nearly 400 more yards than 2nd place, and 700 more than 3rd
• The 2020 Ravens had the third most rushing TDs with 24
• The 2020 Ravens led the NFL in rushing yards per carry with 5.5
• The 2020 Ravens led the NFL in rushes of 20+ yards and 40+ yards

I am not worried about JK Dobbins – can someone tell me why I should be? Why is there so much hype/favoritism around Dobbins as the #1?

Dobbins vs. Edwards shouldn’t even be a thing. But it is.

Currently JK Dobbins ADP (or Average Draft Position) is 15th amongst running backs and 28th overall.

Check out the average ADP for Gus Edwards fantasy: 43 and 128!?!?!

Simply ridiculous.

At the beginning of camp, Dobbins and Gus Edwards were both listed as RB 1 on the Ravens official depth chart. 

Based off of 2020 and the one year they played together, a few notable fantasy stats comparing Gus Edwards and JK Dobbins:

• Dobbins started 1 game in 2020. Edwards started 6
• Dobbins had 134 carries. Edwards had 144
• Dobbins had less receiving yards in 2020 than Edwards

JK Dobbins and Gus Edwards were almost even in redzone carries in 2020 – 29 vs. 27. But, Edwards got the ones that counted:

• Gus Edwards had more carries inside the 5 yard line than JK Dobbins in 2020 – 9 vs. 8
• Gus Edwards had more carries inside the 10 yard line than JK Dobbins in 2020 – 17 vs. 13
• His 6 redzone carries in Week 16 were a season high for Ravens’ RBs.

Last year, Lamar Jackson led the Ravens in rushing attempts with 159 (28.6%). Edwards was second with 144 rushes (25.9%) and Dobbins third with 134 (24.1%).

Edwards is the big-bodied running back who stands in at 6-foot-1, 238 pounds and runs downhill and falls forward. Dobbins is smaller back at 5-foot-10, 212 pounds.

IDK about you but I want the guy that can take the pounding of a full 17 game season. And especially around the goalline.

Pro Football Focus graded Edwards as the fourth best runner in 2020.

Despite being the number two running back on his own team in 2020, he was 21st in the NFL in rushing yards.

In 2020 Edwards had the highest percentage of runs for first downs or touchdowns in the entire NFL. Look at who was second:

Edwards is one of only two players in NFL history to have recorded over 700 rushing yards and averaged at least five yards per carry in each of their first three seasons.

I could continue to pile on the factoids about why Gus Edwards fantasy value is ridiculously low. But that would just be piling on. Speaking of “piles” he has averaged at least 2.6 yards after contact for all three of his NFL seasons. Derrick Henry and Nick Chubb are the only other RBs to do that.

Just as the Tampa Bay Lightning begin to sober up off the heels of their 2nd consecutive Stanley Cup victory, the NHL has not only added a new team, the 2021 NHL Draft is suddenly upon us as the 1st round commenced last night.

As I begin to sober up this morning, here are some things that stood out to me.

1. Michigan Michigan Michigan!
   

   5 first round picks including 3 of the top 5 players selected. No NCAA program had ever had 3 players in the 1st round. The first teammates to go 1-2 in 50 years. The “Children of Yost” are here. Kudos Ann Arbor.

2. Trades Galore!
   

   The Blackhawks and Bluejackets wasted no time in prime time, announcing a blockbuster deal that sent disgruntled Columbus Defensemen Seth Jones to the Windy City for offensive minded blueliner, Adam Boqvist and some picks, providing instant action to the broadcast.

3. Steve Yzerman Does It Again!
   

   As fabulous a player as Stevie Y was he is proving to be just as magical at compiling a roster. The Red Wings Snagged 6-4 defenseman Simon Edvinsson with the No. 6 pick and 6-6 goaltender Sebastian Cossa with the 15th pick, after swinging a deal to move up from 23. Victor Hedman and Andrei Vasilevskiy 2.0 in Hockeytown

4. I Like the Seattle Kraken Uniforms!

   At first being the old curmudgeon that I am, I was skeptical about the newest NHL teams look. I became mildly infatuated with the sweater after watching the expansion draft coverage and upon seeing the lettering and numbering, i fell in love. Can’t wait to see them in action.

5. USA! USA! USA!
   

   Six American’s were drafted in the first round with two players going in the top four as Matty Beniers (Seattle)  Luke Hughes (New Jersey) went 2 and respectively. It’s obvious a new wave of American skaters will have a huge impact on the NHL landscape.

6. Hughes Family Dynasty!
   

   Luke Hughes joins his two bro’s in the NHL, joining Jack in New Jersey.  Brother Quinn, was selected No. 7 by the Canucks in the 2018 NHL Draft, 3 bro’s, 3 first round picks. This Sounds like a John Hughes Movie and i love it! Watch out Manning’s

Hopefully the rest of the 2021 NHL Draft is as action packed as last night’s coverage and as always.
