Why Your Local TV Shows the Wrong NFL Game on Sunday

Every fall Sunday somebody in my fantasy league sends the same message at 1:02 p.m.: "Why is my TV showing this game?" He has three starters in a matchup two states away, and his local CBS station is airing a team nobody in the group chat cares about. Meanwhile his cousin in another city gets the game he wants and a different one at 4:25.

It feels random. It is not. Which NFL game lands on your local channel on a Sunday afternoon comes down to a short list of rules about networks, markets and time slots. Once you know them, you can predict your screen days in advance and stop finding out at kickoff.

The rules that pick your Sunday afternoon games

Sunday afternoon NFL games are split between two networks. CBS carries the AFC package, meaning games where the road team is from the AFC. FOX carries the NFC package, where the road team is from the NFC. Since 2014 the league has also been able to "cross-flex" some games, moving a matchup from one network to the other so a big game reaches more homes. That is why you sometimes see two AFC teams on FOX.

The afternoon has two windows. Early games kick off at 1:00 p.m. Eastern. Late games start at either 4:05 or 4:25. In a typical week one network has a doubleheader, meaning an early game and a late game, while the other has only one slot. The network with the doubleheader usually runs the big late game at 4:25, and that broadcast goes to most of the country.

Inside those limits, your local station has a choice. A CBS affiliate in, say, Denver picks from the AFC games the network has available in each window. It will almost always take the Broncos when they play. When they do not, it picks whatever the station and network expect to draw the most viewers locally, which often means a nearby team or a regional rival, not the game your fantasy roster needs.

What decides itHow it plays out on your TV
Road team's conferenceAFC road team usually means CBS, NFC road team usually means FOX
Doubleheader weekThe network with the doubleheader gives you two games, the other gives you one
Your local teamIts games air in its home market on whichever network has them
Local team at homeThe other network may lose its game in that same time slot in your area
Cross-flexA game can move networks, usually to give a big matchup wider reach

The home game rule that wipes out a window

This is the one that confuses people most. Under the league's TV policy, when your local team plays at home, the network that does not have that game generally cannot show another game opposite it in your market. So if the home team kicks off at 1:00 on FOX, your CBS station may have nothing to air at 1:00 at all, and you get a movie, an infomercial or a pregame show stretched out instead.

The rule dates from the era when the league protected ticket sales by keeping competing games off local TV. Blackouts for unsold games have been suspended for years, but this part of the policy still shapes local schedules. If your team plays at home and you were planning to watch a different early game on the other network, assume it will not be there.

"Just check the TV guide" is not enough

The common advice is to look at your listings on Sunday morning. The trouble is that many guides show a generic "NFL Football" entry until close to game time, and some never name the matchup at all. You learn what you are getting when the broadcast starts.

A better source is the weekly coverage maps that fan sites publish, usually midweek. They color the United States by which game each region gets in each window, for both networks. Searching "NFL coverage map week" plus the week number usually brings them up. They are not official and late changes happen, but in my experience they are right far more often than a vague guide entry. I check them Wednesday or Thursday, before setting my lineup, because knowing I will actually see a player changes how I feel about a close start decision.

Your fantasy lineup and your TV schedule are set by different people with different goals. Planning around both is the only way to see the snaps that matter to you.

When the game you want is not on your local channel

Your options are narrower than people hope, and some cost real money, so it is worth being clear about what each one does.

  • Antenna, cable or a live TV streaming service all show the same thing: your local CBS and FOX stations. Switching from cable to streaming does not change which game you get.
  • Paramount+ streams your local CBS station's game, not a game of your choice. Handy if you have no antenna, useless if your market gets the wrong game.
  • NFL Sunday Ticket, sold through YouTube since 2023, carries out-of-market Sunday afternoon games. It is the only standard option for watching a specific out-of-market game live, and its price is high enough that it only makes sense for people who want this every week.
  • NFL+ covers local and national games on phones and tablets. It does not unlock out-of-market afternoon games on your TV.
  • RedZone jumps between every game during the early and late windows. For fantasy managers it is often the best value, since you see your players' big plays even if you never see a full game.

Prices and packages shift every season, so check the current offer in your area before paying for anything. And if you stream, remember the delay issue I covered in why your sports stream runs behind; fantasy alerts will reach you before the play does.

Why the network sometimes switches you mid-game

Ever had a blowout disappear and a close game appear in its place? Networks can move viewers to a more competitive game late in the fourth quarter, mostly when the original game is out of reach. And when an early game runs long, a station may join the late game in progress so it does not cut off the finish of a close one. Neither move is personal, though it can feel that way when your running back was about to get garbage time carries.

Those switches are another reason the pregame and whip-around shows still have a job, which I touched on in why pregame shows still matter.

What to do before this Sunday

On Wednesday or Thursday, pull up this week's coverage maps and find your region for both networks and both windows. Write down which of your fantasy starters you will see live and which you will only follow through alerts or RedZone. If your playoffs are coming up, do the same for the weeks ahead alongside the matchups in reading a fantasy schedule before your playoffs. It takes ten minutes and ends the 1:02 p.m. group chat complaint for good.
