Bowl Eligibility Rules and How 5-7 Teams Still Get In

Your team finishes 5-7, the season looks over, and then a week later it is suddenly heading to a bowl game in December. Or a 6-6 team you expected to see in the postseason gets left home.

Your team finishes 5-7, the season looks over, and then a week later it is suddenly heading to a bowl game in December. Or a 6-6 team you expected to see in the postseason gets left home. Bowl eligibility rules explain both outcomes, and once you know how they work, the last two weeks of the regular season get a lot more interesting.

Here is the plain version of how a team qualifies, what counts as a win, and how the backup system fills the gaps when there are more bowl spots than qualified teams.

The basic bowl eligibility rules

At the FBS level, the standard bar is a non-losing record. For the usual 12-game regular season, that means six wins. Hit six and you are eligible. Fall short and you need help from the backup rules covered below.

Eligible does not mean invited. Being eligible only puts a team into the pool. Conferences hold contracts with specific bowls, and those bowls pick teams in an order set by each conference. A team can be eligible and still stay home if its league runs out of tie-ins, though in practice nearly every six win team finds a game.

What counts as a win

  • Wins over FBS opponents all count toward the six.
  • One win over an FCS opponent per season can count. A second FCS win does not help your bowl case, which is why most programs schedule only one.
  • Conference championship games are a special case. A team that loses its title game can drop to 6-7 and still be treated as eligible, because it should not be punished for reaching the game.

Teams with a 13th regular season game, which happens when a program plays at Hawaii, have to watch the math. A 6-7 record is a losing record, so the target shifts.

Why there are so many bowls to fill

The modern bowl calendar has grown to roughly 40 games once you include the playoff, which means around 80 teams need to be playing in December and January. There are about 134 FBS programs. In a typical year, somewhere between 75 and 85 of them reach six wins.

That margin is thin. A handful of strong conferences cannibalizing each other, a few teams under postseason bans, or programs in their transition years from FCS can leave the pool short by two or three teams. When that happens, the NCAA has a fallback order.

How 5-7 teams still get into bowl games

When there are not enough six win teams, the waiver process opens a door. The order has shifted slightly over the years, but the core logic stays the same.

  1. Six win teams with special circumstances are used first, such as a team whose record includes two FCS wins.
  2. Programs reclassifying from FCS that have enough wins can be cleared in some years.
  3. 5-7 teams ranked by Academic Progress Rate. The APR measures how well a program keeps its players eligible and enrolled. The 5-7 team with the highest score gets the first open spot, then the next, until every bowl is filled.

This is not a hypothetical. In 2015, Nebraska, Minnesota and San Jose State all played bowl games at 5-7, and all three won. Minnesota did it again in 2023, beating Bowling Green in the Quick Lane Bowl. Coaches of mediocre teams now track their APR the way fans track the rankings.

Teams that are eligible but do not play

The pool can also shrink from the other direction. A program under an NCAA postseason ban is ineligible no matter how many games it wins. Occasionally, a six win team declines an invitation outright, usually because of a coaching change, a thin roster or the cost of traveling to a small bowl across the country. Every decline opens another spot for the next team in line, which is why the final bowl lineup sometimes shifts on selection day itself.

Is the six win standard too low? I do not think so

Every December someone writes that there are too many bowls and a 6-6 team does not deserve a trip. The usual fix offered is a seven win minimum. I think that misses what bowl games are actually for.

For most programs, the trip is worth more than the game. A bowl invite brings around 15 extra practices, which coaches use to develop freshmen and redshirts they barely got to coach in the fall. For a rebuilding team, that is like a mini spring camp in December. Raising the bar to seven wins would cut those reps for exactly the teams that need them most.

The real problem is not 6-6 teams. It is opt outs and roster churn. With players leaving through the transfer portal or sitting out ahead of the draft, some bowl rosters look very different from the team that earned the spot. That is a fair complaint. The win total is not.

How to track bowl eligibility down the stretch

If your team is hovering around .500 in November, a few checks tell you where it stands:

  • Count FCS wins. If there are two, mentally subtract one.
  • Look at the remaining schedule for winnable games. A rivalry game in the final week often decides it, which is part of why college football rivalry trophies carry so much weight late in the year.
  • Check if your conference has more eligible teams than bowl tie-ins. If it does, a six win team may be shipped to an at large spot far from home.
  • If you are at five wins with one game left, look up your program's latest APR. It tells you how good your odds are if the pool runs short.

Frequently asked questions

How many wins do you need to be bowl eligible?

In a standard 12-game season, an FBS team needs six wins for bowl eligibility. Only one win over an FCS opponent can count. Teams that play 13 regular season games need a non-losing record, which usually means seven wins.

Can a 5-7 team go to a bowl game?

Yes, but only if there are not enough eligible teams to fill every bowl. When that happens, the open spots go to 5-7 teams ranked by Academic Progress Rate. Several teams have used this route, including three in 2015.

Can a bowl eligible team be left out of a bowl?

It is possible but rare. Eligibility only puts a team in the pool, and bowls choose from conference partners first. If a league has more eligible teams than tie-ins and no open spots remain elsewhere, a six win team can stay home.
